5 Unique Honeymoon Ideas To Suit Anyone’s Style

This summer my boyfriend David took me and a few of our friends to a beach to have a puppy playdate. It was on a beach that I loved – one that David and I had visited over a year before in our first few weeks of knowing each other.

I was told we would take photos for our Christmas card while we were there since one of our friends was bringing her camera. While we were snapping photos, David proposed. Now when I tell the story it seems like I should have known something was up, but I can be pretty oblivious at times.

Shortly into the planning process we immediately started talking about our honeymoon. Sure flower arrangements and linens are fun too… But we are definitely the open bar and honeymoon types.

We want our wedding to be a fun party for us and our loved ones to celebrate all of the great people in our lives coming together. We want our honeymoon to reflect us as well.

We enjoy having fun, doing something different, and doing things our way and not in the traditional way. So we started to brainstorm ideas on unique honeymoon ideas to fit our interests.

5 Unique Honeymoon Ideas To Suit Anyone’s Style

1. Staycation

Depending on what you’re looking for in a honeymoon, a staycation could be perfect for you and your love – as well as your wallet. A staycation is definitely one of the most budget-friendly options for your honeymoon.

You don’t have to go far to have a romantic night for just the two of you. Use your funds on staying in a nicer hotel room instead of an airfare, lose the technology, instruct friends and family to act as though you’re out of the country, and relax close to home.

Stay at a hotel with a spa, go camping, visit a bed and breakfast, or stay home and spend your honeymoon funds on entertainment like seeing a show, skydiving, or renting a boat for the weekend.

Learn from other couples doing the same research as you are, discover your budget, what’s important to you in a honeymoon destination and the popular places other couples are visiting.

The important thing is to keep it romantic, buy champagne and strawberries and don’t let staying in town deter you from celebrating your honeymoon together.

2. Interest Destination

The destination for your honeymoon doesn’t have to be a romantic city or tropical location; it can be any location that is of interest to the two of you. Think outside the box and write down a few hobbies or interests the two of you have and research places that match your interests.

If you’re both into football, buy tickets to a big game and continue to stay in the city for the rest of your honeymoon…

If you both love history, visit Boston or Washington D.C…

Plan a trip to a video game convention in Vegas, San Diego’s comic con or the NASA space center in Houston…

Take an ultimate ski trip to Switzerland or discover the culture in Japan…

There are so many great options for interest destinations; you just have to find a common interest that will make the trip for both of you.

3. Tour

For a theme similar to the interest destination, taking a tour for your honeymoon combines interest destination and road trip. This is definitely less of a relaxing vacation and more of an adventure.

On the plus side, you’ll have a ton of time to talk, create fun playlists together, play road trip games and visit some cool places that both of you would enjoy.

You can take a wine tour by road tripping to prominent wineries in your area…

A museum tour…

A haunted house tour…

A National park tour…

A camping tour…

Or any other type of theme your heart’s desire.

This is yet another cost-effective honeymoon if you do it right. Try to stick to a tour that is in close proximity to your home, pick one weekend to stay in a luxurious hotel and then stay in budget hotels or camp for the rest of the trip.

4. Family Trip

Remember that your honeymoon can be anything you want it to be, so deciding to include family on your honeymoon is completely your prerogative! Why not bring your kids or parents along to enjoy the vacation with you?

At least try to find some time for just the two of you though, whether it be a night alone, a romantic dinner or an excursion. If you have a kiddo that is too young to be alone, enjoy a movie and champagne while they are sleeping or bring a parent to watch them for a night.

Include your family by visiting a family-friendly location like Disneyland, Club Med Ixtapa Pacific, Out’n’About Treehouse Treesort in Oregon, or an amusement park.

The plus side to bringing your family on your trip is that kids tend to be cheap or free for many flights, hotels, and meals and your parents will more than likely be paying for themselves.

5. Urban City

The perfect honeymoon isn’t all tropical beaches or island resorts. Some couples prefer their honeymoon to be spent in more urban areas rather than putting their toes in the sand.

Big cities tend to be expensive but there are always ways to cut costs no matter where you travel. Cities like New York, New Orleans, San Francisco, Seattle, and Miami are all popular places to visit, hence why they are so congested and expensive. However, picking bigger cities with less tourism, such as Atlanta, Houston, Salt Lake City, Tampa, or Riverside is a great way to have an urban honeymoon without the added expense.

David and I are still tossing honeymoon ideas back and forth and one hasn’t stuck quite yet, but I know that our honeymoon will reflect us and be a blast.

The unlimited options are a bit overwhelming, but it’s nice to remember that this trip is all about us, just like our wedding will be. We don’t have to stick to the traditional idea of a honeymoon just like we don’t have to stick to a traditional wedding and neither does anyone else.

I’m not sure if our honeymoon will be a quiet bed and breakfast, an NFL game, a craft beer tour, a trip with our parents, a week in Tampa, or a traditional honeymoon in Hawaii – but I know it’ll be something unique to us to matter where we go.
