Walk Across the Chain Bridge

Budapest’s most prominent bridge connecting Buda and Pest is the Chain Bridge. Completed in 1849, the Chain Bridge was officially named István Széchenyi. You can start your morning walk on one side and walk across the Chain Bridge to the other side if you’re sightseeing in Budapest. Also, you can walk the bridge in the evening. It makes some great pictures of the night.

Scottish engineer Adam Clark supervised the construction, who later went on to marry a girl from Hungary and settled in Hungary. The place on the bridge’s Buda end was named after him. The Chain Bridge was inaugurated on November 20, 1849.

Visit the Abandoned Cemetery

Visit the Salgótarjáni út cemetery on the city’s Pest side; it’s the oldest Jewish burial site. Throughout World War II, most of the Jewish population was forced out of Budapest, leaving the cemetery in ruins. The trees and plants started to take over the cemetery. You will have to watch your step, as many of the tombs have fallen through the ground and goods may be opened and stolen.

Some of the tombstones and burial chambers are large and exquisite, although it sounds strange to say a headstone is beautiful. It is an excellent place to learn about their history.

Visit the Shoes on the Danube Bank

The “Shoes on the Danube River” is a monument to commemorate those killed during World War II by the Arrow Cross militiamen. There are 60 pairs of shoes put on the ledge in remembrance of 3,500 people who were forced to take off their shoes and literally be fired at on the water’s edge where their bodies were washed down the river.

Visit the Matthias Church

Matthias Church is more than 700 years old and one of Buda’s oldest buildings. This cathedral in gothic style with a colorful tiled roof is one of the best sights in the city. The church’s high vaulted ceilings and ornate decorations throughout the church are just as beautiful inside.

Explore the Cave Church

The cave church tucked away in the Gellért Hill Cave is the most exciting church in Budapest. This church was built by monks in the 1920s in a natural cave. The church’s name is Sziklatemplom, meaning Rock Church in Hungarian. The church acted as a hospital during the Second World War and received refugees from the war.

Conclusion

Overall, the whole travel package can be found in Budapest. It is beautiful, has lots of history, is safe, provides lots of things to do, has delicious food and good beer, and is budget-friendly. For more travel tips in Budapest, click here.
