Morning Routine For Travelers: How To Start Each Day Right While On The Road

1. Forget about the Snooze Button

We’ve all used the snooze button in the morning, but if you want to change your life for the better – forget about it!

Despite what you might think, this button is not beneficial for your sleep and does not really prolong it.

Once your brain is interrupted, your sleep won’t go back to the same quality as before, so you’re better off getting up as soon as you hear that alarm and enjoying a full day!

2. Drink Water

Of course, we all need to drink water during the day, but this is especially important in the morning.

If you’re traveling in warm locations, this accounts for even more dehydration in your body after sleeping all night.

For this reason, drink a minimum of 2 cups of water every morning. This will get your metabolism going and energise your body.

If you don’t enjoy plain water, squeeze some lemon into it. In fact, this can be even more beneficial for you as the combination helps to prepare your digestive system for the breakfast, lunch and dinner…

And of course, all the snacks in between.

3. Stretch

As a traveler you probably spend your days walking around new cities, working from cafés, co-working spaces and hotels or in transit.

While walking is highly recommended, sitting down in one place for hours is never good for your body, which is why you should use each morning as an opportunity to stretch it all out.

“I spend hours sitting at a desk, writing on my laptop. Once I started stretching out in the morning, I found my body to be much more resilient to such inactivity” – says Jane Samspson, a freelance essay writer.

Stretch out right after waking up. This can improve your circulation and help with your posture throughout the day.

4. Breathe

Meditation is a popular way to start the day, especially if you’re in need of a clearer head and more focus…

However, seeing as traveling rarely leaves time for long bouts of meditation, deep breathing can also do the trick.

Breathing is known to positively impact the health of your heart and brain, as well as lessen stress in your body.

5. Take a Shower

If you’re not doing this already, it’s time to start now. Showering in the morning is important because you sweat during the night and release toxins from your body.

This is not a difficult change to make. Simply swap your routine of showering at night to showering in the morning and it will help you to wake up, rinse toxins away from the skin and start your day off fresh.

To really energise your body and kickstart your metabolism, switch the water temperature from hot to cold for the last few seconds of your shower. This will also help to close your pores and stop dirt and sweat from clogging them throughout the day.

6. Write Things Down

We’re not talking about your travel journal… A travel journal is a place where you can write about your travel experiences, plans and ideas. This is a good practice to get into while traveling, but why not write a more personal journal, too?

Writing about your feelings is known to help you solve problems more easily, clarify your thoughts and increase your immunity.

Just a few minutes of writing at the start of the day can do wonders for structuring your thoughts, so leave this activity for the morning.

7. Get Inspired

One of the best ways to start your day off right is by giving yourself some time to gain inspiration. Being in a new place is exciting, but requires a great deal of creativity if you want to make the most of it.

Get inspired prior to setting off each day by watching or reading a section of an inspiring movie or book. You can even watch speeches from inspiring people, like TED Talks for example, to get your creative juices flowing.

8. Exercise

One of the absolute most important activities for the morning is exercise. A pre-breakfast workout of only few minutes can help you start the day in a positive mindset, reduce stress and improve your sleep later on.

Not only that, if you’re constantly traveling and prefer to spend more time sampling the local delicacies rather than walking for hours on end, you’ll need something to keep you active.

9. Enjoy Silence

Life can often get crazy for travelers. New destinations, new people, new food and new cultures – this is fun, but can be very overwhelming if you don’t take the time to just enjoy the silence.

Use your spare time in the mornings to focus on the peacefulness around you. Even a few minutes a day can clear your mind and prepare your body for what the day has in store.

10. Be Present in the Moment

Following on from my last point, it’s important to take the time to be present in the moment and appreciate your surroundings.

Being someone who travels, chances are, you don’t spend a lot of time in one place, which is why it often helps to take a step back and focus on the now in order to gain your bearings.

And if you do prefer to spend more time in one place, taking a moment to appreciate the present can get you excited about the day ahead.

Reserve a few minutes each morning to connect to your location, even if your entire day is going to be filled with busy tasks.
