Our last few days in Rio de Janeiro (after a month of touring around) were spent chilling out on the beach in NiteroÃ, witnessing yet another magical sunset and getting wet and wild at the majorly fun Rio Water Planet!
Niteroi, located just across Guanabara Bay from the city of Rio de Janeiro is full of surprises.
First of all, you have to drive over the longest bridge in the Southern Hemisphere (and sixth longest in the world) to get to it from Rio.
Second of all, while the city itself isn’t anything too special, the beaches outside of the city absolutely make up for it. The beaches in Niteroi range from quiet and secluded to busy and vibrant and they’re all just as beautiful as the next. As we were wandering around on the backstreets we actually met a local who invited us to his mother’s beach restaurant, so we wandered down with him and spent the rest of the afternoon sat under the shade of an umbrella, eating delicious food and soaking up the sun.
Third of all, the views across to Rio de Janeiro are breathtaking, especially at sunset.
Even if you are staying in Rio, Niteroi is worth a day trip (mainly for the beaches but apparently the nightlife is good too).
After Niteroi, we made the last leg of our one month Rio trip back to where it all started – in Jacarepagua, a neighbourhood in Rio’s west zone and home to some great friends of ours who hosted us during our first week in the city.
Seeming as we were all together again and we were only back for a weekend before heading down south, we decided to finish our Rio trip with a BANG… or rather, a SPLASH.
So we headed to Rio Water Planet, a huge playground for people big and small that most gringo’s (tourists) don’t know about. We had some fun that’s for sure. Check it out…
